While we need to be careful about health we still can’t compromise on the taste, you need to get creative. Added to that if you have teens and senior citizens under the same roof , you need to satisfy all the taste buds, your creativity gets tested..

Here’s to one of those challenges….


Maida/All-purpose-flour – 1Cup 

Oil- 2 tbs ( for the dough)

Cabbage – 1 Cup

Carrot – 2 Cups

Cumin seds – 1 tsp

Pav Bhaji Masala- 1 tsp

Turmeric- 1/2 tsp

Mustard Seeds- 1/2 tsp

Salt and Chilli powder per taste

Ginger-garlic or ginger paste – 1/2 tsp

Oil for cooking – 1 or 2 tbs

Water as needed


Making the dough:

  • Mix the maida, pinch of salt and 1 tbs oil and mix well
  • Noe add cold water slowly and mix the dough well.
  • Cover with a damp towel for 1 hour

Making the filling 

  • Chop Cabbage fine ( shown in the slide show) and grate Carrot 
  • Steam in the microwave for 1 minute ( this is optional, I do this to keep the healthy angle going ) 
  • Take a pan, put some oil and let it heat 
  • Add the mustard and cumin seeds 
  • Once they spatter and then add the ginger garlic or ginger paste and cook for a minute 
  • Now add the steamed veggies to the pan 
  • Add salt, turmeric chili, pav bhaji masala 
  • Cover and cook for a few minutes till the raw taste dies 
  • Once cooked, take the lid off and let it cool


Take the dough, add 1 tbs of oil and mix well and let alone for another 10 min 

Take a small ball, roll it into a chapati/ tortilla size

Put some stuffing in the middle and close from all sides ( here you can get creative , you can make any shape as long as you can close the dough from all ends 

Take a pot that has  a steamer in it or use the idli maker 

Boil the water ( if it is a steamer ) and if it is a idli maker then go as you make idli 

For the steamer, put the cabbage leaf or banana leaf on the steamer ( which has holes) 

Place the dumplings on the leaf

Close the lid and cook or steam for 8-10 min based on the number of dumplings you place .( I placed 10 pieces and steamed for 10 min , it could have been done by minute 8) 

Once the timer done, take the lid off 

Place on a plate, dip with soy sauce or any tangy or spicy sauce 




You can make it with grilled chicken or any grilled meat or sea food

You can use any combination of veggies, make sure you get a strong flavor and mild too
